VN 20/07 Research Fellowship on Nowcasting of Severe Weather
The Research Fellow will join the Observation Department of the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium. In order to prepare for the upcoming Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) observations and related capabilities, she/he will explore the use of satellite data for improving nowcasting of severe thunderstorms over Europe.
The fellow will make use of the Rapid Developing Thunderstorm (RDT) algorithm, along with observations from the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and Global Lightning Mapper (GLM) on the geostationary GOES16 satellite and/or observations from the Flexible Combined Imager (FCI) and Lightning Imager (LI) when operational on MTG. Additionally, radar data and severe weather reports are used to validate precursors of severe weather, such as sudden jumps in the total lightning activity.
Familiarisation with RDT;
Collecting and processing of the different satellite and radar data sets;
Implementation of innovative applications to improve nowcasting of severe weather;
Publish results thereof in peer-reviewed journals.
Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMIB)
University degree in Physics, Mathematics, Meteorology, Remote Sensing, or equivalent, preferably to PhD level, and relevant research experience.
Candidates must be able to work effectively in English, both verbally and written.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
In depth scientific knowledge of remote sensing physics
Demonstrated experience in developing and coding scientific application software in scientific programming languages (Python, Matlab, IDL etc.)
Excellent analysis, synthesis and presentation skills
Strong interpersonal skills and coordination capabilities; and a proven ability to apply these to the interactions within a team and between teams.
The Fellowship is offered initially for one-year, with the possibility of extension for up to two additional years.
The amount of remuneration will be in accordance with corresponding staff at RMIB and will depend on qualification and experience. In addition, approved travel costs are reimbursed.
