VN 19/52 reissue Archive and Data Access Engineer

Within the Data Centre Operations Team of the User Support and Climate Services Division, the Archive and Data Access Engineer will ensure the successful and complete operational archiving of data and products from the next generation Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) geostationary satellite system and their access by the users. This involves monitoring, anomaly analysis of complex ground systems, testing and validation of new releases, and support to users.


  • Maintain and configure monitoring scripts & tools for MTG data ingestion and access services;
  • Analyse and document service anomalies and follow up their resolution using existing configuration management processes;
  • Define, set-up, evolve and automate test cases to validate software fixes and new service releases;
  • Provide user support for MTG related user enquiries;
  • Specify and maintain the service operations documentation including training material for operators of new services;
  • Support the specification of user requirements for service enhancements.

An IT professional with a university degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or another relevant discipline.


The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.

  • Minimum two years of recent practical experience in the following:
    • Working in Unix / Linux environments
    • Scripting (Python, Perl, Bash) and/or Programming (Java, C++)
    • Working with Relational Databases (e.g. PostgreSQL)
  • Web Service development experience (API, XML, JavaScript);
  • Knowledge of software engineering, as well as verification and validation test methods;
  • Excellent problem-solving skills;
  • Pro-active attitude and ability to work autonomously with a minimum of supervision under high workloads.

Experience in the following would be advantageous:

  • Hands-on experience with Earth Observation data and formats (e.g. netCDF, HDF, BUFR, GRIB);
  • Experience in using XML for the definition of meta-data, specification of configuration files, and data format representation;
  • Use of automated Software Test Tools for regression testing of new software releases (e.g. JUnit, QF Test);
  • Working in an operational environment.


The initial contract will be of 4 years’ duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT.
This post is graded A2/A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 5,797 per month (net of internal tax) which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
